The Double Nickel Diner started as a separate dinning room, sharing the same menu and kitchen as the adjacent Double Nickel Bar & Grill in Olathe, Kansas. A few months later, they purchased the bar and combined them into a lighter and more family friendly bar & grill that isn't sure which name they want to use. The Double Nickel's food is consistent and very reasonably priced. My favorite items so far have been the hand breaded chicken fried steak sandwich and the baby back ribs. The burgers and prime rib sandwich are also good. The French fries are not fresh cut, but are well prepared. I was fond of the chili, but the last time I visited the Double Nickel, the chili was almost all beans. The Double Nickel's fried chicken is the most distinctive dish I have tried. It has a sweet coating that I haven't had before, as if it was made using sweetened corn flakes. Daily "Blue Plate Specials" range from $2.25 for 3 tacos on Tuesday to KC Strip or Rib Eye Steak with potato and vegetable of the day for $10.95 on Saturday. The Double Nickel Diner has a challenge sandwich which is called the "Bet-Cha-Can't" Burger: 3 one lb. patties of meat, 2 eggs, 3 slices of ham, 9 slices of cheese, 8 slices of bacon, 1 cup of chili, topped with sour cream, on a 10" bun. Eat the burger and 2 pounds of French fries in 30 minutes and it is free. Otherwise it is $25. Breakfast is served all day. Complete breakfasts come with toast or biscuit and range from $4.79 for 2 eggs & hash browns to $8.59 for a pork chop, eggs & hash browns.
