Empire District Electric Company Power Dam Falls

The waterfall over the Empire District Electric Company's Power Dam at Riverton, Kansas is the most impressive water feature that I have found in Kansas to date. The power, the sound, the experience of standing on the Highway 107 bridge and seeing the waterfall over the dam extend for a quarter mile combine to create a special experience.

The overflow (or overfall) dam is one of two dams which form the 400 acre Lake Lowell from Spring River and Shoal Creek. The no longer operating Lowell Hydroelectric Plant is located on the other dam. The active power plant is the coal fired Empire District Electric Company Plant near Historic Route 66.
